Tubing used for mechanical and light gauge structural applications. Mechanical tube is produced to meet specific end use requirements, specifications, tolerances and chemistries. This allows for more specific property uniformity throughout the tube compared to standard pipe or tube. While Mechanical tube can be produced to standard specifications when requested, it is often produced to “typical” properties that focus mainly on the yield strength for a precise size and wall thickness. In some applications with severe forming, yield strength may not even be specified and the mechanical tube is produced to be “fit for use”. Mechanical tubing encompasses a wide range of both structural and non-structural applications

Specification Grade ASTM Size Range
Hot Rolled Electric Resistance Welded (HREW) 1010, 1020 A513, Type 1 1/2" OD x .065" W to 12" OD x 1/4" W
Description:
ASTM A513 covers electric resistance welded carbon and alloy steel tubing for use as mechanical tubing. This specification covers mechanical tubing made from hot or cold rolled steel. This specification covers round, square, rectangular, and special shape tubing.
ASTM A513 Type 1 is produced to O.D. and Wall dimensions. This is the least expensive mechanical tubing. It is produced from low carbon steel & possesses relatively good cold working characteristics. Also available as special order in DS, HSLA, galvanized, flash-controlled and telescoping.
Cold Rolled Electric Resistance Welded (CREW) 1008, 1010 A513, Type 2 3/8" Sqr. x .028" W to 2" Sqr. x .083" W
Description:
ASTM A513 covers electric resistance welded carbon and alloy steel tubing for use as mechanical tubing. This specification covers mechanical tubing made from hot or cold rolled steel. This specification covers round, square, rectangular, and special shape tubing.
ASTM A513 Type 2 is produced to O.D. and Wall dimensions. It is produced from low carbon steel & possesses relatively good cold working characteristics. Also available as special order in DS, HSLA, galvanized, flash-controlled and telescoping.
Application:
Used in environments where cosmetically appealing surfaces and light weight are required. Examples include display racks, furniture, greenhouses, exercise equipment, and many others.
Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) 1020, 1026, As Drawn or Stress Relieved Annealed (SRA) A513, Type 5 1/4" OD x .035" W to 12" OD x 5/8" W
Description:
DOM tubing is normally produced to O.D. and I.D. dimensions. It is an Electric Welded Tube, redrawn to remove weld flash, control dimension and improve properties. DOM stands for “drawn over mandrel” and the material is tested for weld soundness and straightness. This product is superior in finish and wall uniformity to seamless tubing. DOM offers superior dimensional tolerances, concentricity and mechanical properties.
Application:
Commonly used in the automotive, appliance and construction industries.
Hot Finish Seamless 1026 HR ,1045, 1040, A519 3" OD x 1/2" W to 20" OD x 3" W
Description:
ASTM A519 covers several grades of carbon and alloy steel seamless mechanical tubing. When welding is used for joining the weldable mechanical tube grades, the welding procedure shall be suitable for the grade, the condition of the components, and the intended service.
Hot Finished Tube is produced to O.D. and Wall dimensions. It is a lower-cost product than Cold Drawn Seamless tube and is a good material for applications that do not require the close dimensional tolerances and quality of surface finish that a Cold Drawn Seamless tube provides. If tight tolerances are required, machining is used to finish the product to exact specifications.
Application:
Hot Finish Seamless tubing is used for products that require a thicker wall and a high strength material such as hydraulic cylinders, rollers and sleeves.
Cold Drawn Seamless 1026 HR ,1045, 1040, A519 3/4" OD x .083" W to 8" OD x 1" W
Description:
ASTM A519 covers several grades of carbon and alloy steel seamless mechanical tubing. When welding is used for joining the weldable mechanical tube grades, the welding procedure shall be suitable for the grade, the condition of the components, and the intended service.
Cold Drawn Seamless Tube is normally drawn to O.D. and I.D. dimensions. It has closer dimensional tolerances, better surface finish and higher mechanical properties than corresponding grades of Hot Finish Seamless tubing.
Application:
Cold Drawn Seamless tubing is used for mechanical applications such as bushings, spacers, or other parts where mechanical properties are not specified or required.

ASTM Specification Steel Material Brief Explanation
A-511 MT 403/410/414/416Se/431/440A/405/429/430/443 ASTM A511 covers seamless stainless tubing for use in mechanical applications where corrosion-resistant or high-temperature strength is needed.
A-513 MT 1006/1008/1009/1010/1020/1026/1030/1035/1040/1050/1060/1340 ASTM A513 covers electric resistance welded carbon and alloy steel tubing for use as mechanical tubing. This specification covers mechanical tubing made from hot or cold rolled steel. This specification covers round, square, rectangular, and special shape tubing.
A-519 MT 1010/1015/X1015/1020/X1020 ASTM A519 covers several grades of carbon and alloy steel seamless mechanical tubing. When welding is used for joining the weldable mechanical tube grades, the welding procedure shall be suitable for the grade, the condition of the components, and the intended service.

1.  Hot rolled mechanical tubing is produced by heating a solid billet or bar and then rotary piercing it as it rotates on rollers.  Then the final processing through multiple pass size-reducing mills occurs. Tolerances and finish are similar to other hot worked steel products. Range of sizes and grades are more restricted than cold finished by the nature of the process involved. This tubing is used where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are unimportant or secondary, or where desired tolerances, finish, and final mechanical properties are to be attained by machining and heat treatment. HRS tubing is manufactured to outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness (W) dimensions.

2. Cold Drawn Seamless Mechanical Tubing (CDS) is a cold drawn 1018/1026 steel tube which offers uniform tolerances, enhanced machinability and increased strength and tolerances compared to hot-rolled products. Produced from hot rolled 1026, the cold drawing process increases the tube's physical properties and offers better tolerances and reduced machining allowances over hot finish seamless.

Cold Drawn Seamless Mechanical Tubing is produced by piercing hot billets and subsequent rolling which reduces their diameter and elongates them. This material is then passed through a die and over a mandrel plug to produce an accurate size and gauge which is the essence of the cold drawing process.

There are probably hundreds of different methods for packing a pipe, and most of them have merit, but there are two principles that are vital for any method to work prevent rusting and Sea transportation security.

● Plastic caps plugged at the two sides of pipe ends

● Should be avoided by the steel strapping and transport damage

● Bundled signs should be uniform and consistent

● The same bundle(batch) of steel pipe should be came from the same furnace.

● The steel pipe has the same furnace number, the same steel grade, the same specifications.
