Key Focus Items of the Latest API Standard

I. Core Quality Verification Items
These are crucial for ensuring the basic performance of pipeline pipes meets requirements.

1. Mechanical Properties:

Tensile Test: The core requirement is to ensure that the yield strength and tensile strength are within the allowable range of the standard. Different grades (e.g., X70, X80) and PSL grades (PSL1 and PSL2) have different requirements, with PSL2 having more stringent requirements (specifying upper and lower limits). Elongation (a plasticity index) is also assessed.

2. Impact Toughness: The Charpy V-notch impact test verifies the material's resistance to brittle fracture at low temperatures, which is especially important for pipelines operating in cold regions.

3. Chemical Composition Control: The content of elements such as carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur must be ensured to be within specified ranges. API 5L has stricter requirements for the chemical composition of PSL2 than PSL1. The new standard has also updated the specifications for the range of chemical elements.

4. Process Performance and Dimensions:

5. Hydrostatic Test: This test is required for every steel pipe to verify its pressure resistance and sealing performance. The new standard specifically mentions the calibration requirements for pressure gauges in hydrostatic testing.

6. Non-destructive Testing (NDE): Defects (such as delamination and cracks) on the internal and surface of steel pipes are detected using methods such as ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle testing. The new standard also emphasizes the qualification certification of NDE personnel and the requirements for magnetic particle testing.

7. Dimensional Accuracy: Strict tolerance requirements are imposed on outer diameter, wall thickness, ovality, and straightness.

II. Special Operating Conditions and New Focus Areas For specific service environments and new application scenarios, the following items are receiving increasing attention.

1. Sour Service: Pipelines used in environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) must pass sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) tests. The new standard has specific requirements for this.

2. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Transportation: With the increase in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, this updated 47th edition specifically adds requirements for pipes used for carbon dioxide transportation.

3. High-Frequency Welded (HFW) Steel Pipe Quality Control: The new standard introduces updated requirements for the quality control of high-frequency welded (HFW) steel pipes, addressing a key weakness in welded steel pipe production.

4. Record Retention: The new standard mandates the retention of test records, a crucial part of the API Q1 system management and a guarantee of traceability throughout the product lifecycle.

API Spec 5L Version 47 was officially released on June 2, 2026.
