Steel pipe sandblasting is a process that uses high-speed abrasive impact to clean and roughen the surface of steel pipes. Its core purpose is to remove rust and scale, and to provide adhesion for subsequent anti-corrosion coatings. It is often the most critical step in pipeline anti-corrosion projects, determining the lifespan of the coating.
In engineering applications, this process mainly revolves around two core aspects: quality standards and process equipment.
1. Core Quality Standard: Rust Removal Grade The cleanliness of the steel pipe surface after sandblasting is strictly graded, with the most common requirement being Sa2.5 (very thorough sandblasting rust removal). You need to meet the following requirements based on the project:
Sa2.5 Standard: The surface should be free of visible grease, dirt, scale, rust, and paint coatings. Any remaining traces should only be slight spots or streaks. This is the most commonly used standard before applying anti-corrosion coating to steel pipes.
Other grades: These include Sa1 (light cleaning), Sa2 (more thorough cleaning), and Sa3 (making the steel surface clean and exhibiting a uniform metallic color).
2. Process and Equipment Technology
Working Principle: Powered by compressed air (or high-pressure water), abrasives such as quartz sand, steel grit, and steel shot are propelled at high speed onto the surface of a steel pipe. The impact and cutting action removes rust and creates a certain roughness.
Equipment Automation: Modern sandblasting equipment typically includes a steel pipe rotation and movement mechanism. For example, a roller or friction wheel drives the steel pipe to rotate at a uniform speed, while a trolley or track system simultaneously propels the steel pipe axially, achieving uniform sandblasting across the entire surface and avoiding uneven quality caused by manual operation.
