Iraq-Syria Strategic Oil Pipeline Restarted

This week, a decades-old cross-regional energy pipeline project resurfaced. The U.S. State Department officially announced its support for the Iraqi and Syrian governments to advance the repair and reconstruction of the oil pipeline between the two countries, defining it as a "priority infrastructure project of bilateral and regional strategic significance."

The pipeline will connect Iraq's oil-producing heartland with export markets along the Mediterranean coast. According to the plan disclosed by the U.S., Washington will lead an international consortium to handle the technical and financial aspects of the project. Once fully repaired, the pipeline's initial transport capacity is expected to reach 2 million barrels of crude oil per day. Previously, Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding with Syria earlier this month, and U.S. energy giant Chevron is considered a potential implementer of the project.

The restart of this "energy corridor" has a strong sense of urgency. Affected by the war with Iran and the disruption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the global energy supply chain faces severe challenges, making the search for alternative transportation routes a top priority. The CEO of Total Energy recently pointed out that Syria has the potential to become "an important transit country for Iraqi oil to the Mediterranean," especially given the obstruction of traditional maritime routes.
