1. Core Features: The Versatile "All-Purpose Worker"
Its core application scenarios are completely different from the fixed pipelines we see on land, primarily serving downhole operations in oil and gas wells. Its key characteristics are:
Continuous and Jointless: Traditional tubing relies on threaded connections section by section, while continuous tubing has an average length of 3000 meters, with a record of nearly 8000 meters. This greatly reduces the risk of connection leaks and makes tripping operations highly efficient.
Repeated Bending and Coiling: This is its greatest "superpower." It can be repeatedly wound onto a drum thanks to the excellent ductility of low-carbon alloy steel. This design makes the equipment very compact, allowing for pressurized operation and providing significant advantages in protecting oil and gas reservoirs.
2. Three Typical Application Scenarios
"All-Purpose Repairman" for Oil and Gas Wells: This is its most classic role. It can be used for almost all downhole maintenance operations, including wax removal and well washing, unsticking and fishing, acid fracturing, and gas lift fluid removal, hence the name "all-purpose worker."
Downhole "Circulating Heater": In some oil wells prone to wax buildup, coiled tubing can be run into the well, with a thinner insulated pipe running inside to form a circulation loop. Hot water heated by a surface boiler circulates in this loop, carrying heat directly downhole and effectively preventing crude oil from waxing.
Cutting-Edge Technology's "Core Tubing": Its applications are constantly expanding. For example, in Changqing Oilfield's latest CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) project, corrosion-resistant alloy coiled tubing is used extensively as the core channel for injecting liquid carbon dioxide underground. This large-diameter design fundamentally eliminates the leakage risk of traditional threaded connections, improving safety and long-term reliability.
3.Material and Design Evolution
To adapt to the complex downhole environment, the materials and designs of coiled tubing are constantly being upgraded:
Corrosion-Resistant Materials: In addition to conventional low-carbon alloy steel, corrosion-resistant alloys or duplex stainless steels like 2205 and 2507 are used in highly corrosive environments containing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.
High strength and lightweight: In order to withstand greater self-weight and external pressure in the deep sea or ultra-deep wells, the industry is also developing composite coiled tubes, which are reinforced with high-strength fibers and resins and can withstand huge axial loads while maintaining flexibility.
