The surface treatment of elbows varies depending on the material, application, and corrosion resistance requirements, and is mainly divided into several categories, including galvanizing, anti-corrosion coating, and pickling passivation. Below is an introduction based on common application scenarios and processes:

1. Galvanizing: Classic but Increasingly Restricted
Galvanizing was once the most common corrosion protection method for carbon steel elbows, mainly divided into two types:

Hot-dip galvanizing: Immersing the elbow in molten zinc to form a thicker coating, providing good corrosion resistance, suitable for outdoor applications.

Electro-galvanizing: Forming a coating through an electrochemical reaction, lower cost, but the surface is relatively less smooth.

It should be noted that cold galvanizing has been banned due to environmental concerns. Furthermore, because it easily produces rust and scale when used in water pipes, leading to excessive heavy metal levels, the national standard has prohibited the use of galvanized elbows in cold water pipes of newly built residential buildings since 2000.

2. Anti-corrosion Coating Process (Mainstream Solution)
For elbows requiring higher corrosion resistance (especially buried pipes or pipes transporting corrosive media), a multi-layer coating system is typically used. A typical process flow includes pretreatment, primer, intermediate coat, and topcoat.

Pretreatment (Critical Foundation): Any coating process begins with thorough surface cleaning. Common methods include sandblasting, shot blasting, or pickling. The purpose is to remove rust, oil, etc., exposing the metal surface to its natural color and achieving a certain roughness (e.g., Sa 2.5 grade), which is fundamental to ensuring coating adhesion.

Common Coating Systems (Taking Heavy-Duty Corrosion Protection as an Example):

Primer (Zinc-Rich Coating): Spraying inorganic zinc silicate coatings, etc., to provide cathodic protection. The thickness is typically controlled at 60-80μm.

Intermediate Coating (Shielding Layer): Spraying a thick-film epoxy micaceous iron oxide intermediate coat to increase coating thickness and improve shielding effect.

Topcoat (Weather-Resistant Layer): Spraying acrylic polyurethane topcoat, etc., to resist external corrosion from ultraviolet rays, chemical media, etc.

Other Common Anti-Corrosion Coatings:

Epoxy Powder Coating (FBE/3PE): Commonly used in buried pipelines. Double-layer fusion-bonded epoxy powder coatings, for example, allow for fully mechanized operation and stable anti-corrosion quality. According to standards, external corrosion protection for drinking water pipe fittings can also be achieved using epoxy coal tar pitch, 3PE, and epoxy resin fiberglass processes.

Solvent-free epoxy coatings: High solids content, non-volatile, thick film formed in one application, suitable for heavy-duty corrosion protection of irregularly shaped parts such as elbows.

Drinking water grade internal corrosion protection: For elbows conveying drinking water, internal processes meeting hygiene standards can be used, such as hot-melt epoxy resin (EP), IPN8710 anti-corrosion coating, and cement mortar lining.

3. Stainless steel elbows: Emphasis on surface treatment and passivation. Stainless steel itself has strong corrosion resistance, but the treatment focus differs.

Food and drinking water industry: Strict national standards (GB/T 21472-2008) require a surface roughness (Ra) of less than 1.6μm to prevent bacterial growth and must pass a hygiene and safety evaluation.

Acid pickling and passivation: Carbon steel elbows are commonly protected with paint, while stainless steel elbows typically undergo acid pickling followed by passivation to restore and strengthen the passivation film on their surface.
